Economics B.A.


TOTAL DEGREE HOURS: 120

Economics offers a clear and logical way of thinking about complicated issues such as unemployment, inflation, pollution, and crime. The Department of Economics offers broad course choices allowing students to tailor their programs to provide training for professional careers in business, teaching, government, and law. State Mandated Common Course Prerequisites (6 credit hours)


Students wishing to transfer to USF should complete an A.A. degree at a Florida College System institution. Some courses required for the major may also meet General Education requirements thereby transferring maximum hours to the university.

If a student wishes to transfer without an A.A. degree and has fewer than 60 semester hours of acceptable credit, the student must meet the university’s entering freshman requirements including ACT or SAT test scores, GPA, and course requirements.

Transfer students are also required to comply with the immunization, foreign language, and continuous enrollment policies of the university.

Students should complete the following prerequisite courses at the lower level prior to entering the university. If these courses are not taken at a Florida College System institution, they must be completed before the degree is granted.

Unless stated otherwise, a grade of C is the minimum acceptable grade in prerequisite courses.

  • (ECO X013 and ECO X023) or (ECO XXXX and ​ ECO XXXX) - 6 total credit hours

Major Core (6 courses; 18 Credit Hours)


ECO 1000  (if taken before both ECO 2013  and ECO 2023 ) may be substituted for a maximum of 3 hours of Economics Elective credit.

ECP 3703  Managerial Economics may be substituted for ECO 3101 . Students may not take both for credit.

Students may substitute QMB 3200   for STA 2023  .

Students may substitute (MAC 2233  or MAC 2311  or an equivalent Calculus course) for ECO 2052 .

Major (Restricted) Electives: (15 Credit Hours)


Choose 5 courses (15 credit hours) of Economics electives numbered 3000 or higher from the list of potential elective courses.

Notes: No more than 3 hours credit hours of ECO 4914 - Independent Research  may be applied toward the major.

Major GPA (All USF courses which are applied to major requirements):  2.0  

General Education GPA (All USF courses which are applied to General Education requirements):   2.0

Grading Requirements


Students must obtain a grade of C- or higher in all courses required for the major or minor in Economics.

Note:  Some USF courses have higher grade criteria to meet prerequisite knowledge necessary for progression into higher level courses.

D/F Policy


All students entering USF for the first time, in Fall 2012 or later, who earn 3 (three) D and/or F grades in any of the following courses at USF: ECO 2013 , ECO 2023 , ECO 3101 , ECO 3203 , STA 2023 QMB 2100 , QMB 3200  and ECO 2052   (or MAC 2233  or MAC 2311  or equivalent) will be required to change their major to a major more appropriate to their goals and academic performance, and to a major that is not conferred by the Department of Economics through the College of Arts and Sciences.

All continuing USF students who entered USF prior to Fall 2012 and who have not earned any D or F grades in any of the following courses at USF: ECO 2013 , ECO 2023 , ECO 3101 , ECO 3203 , STA 2023 QMB 2100 QMB 3200  and ECO 2052   (or MAC 2233  or MAC 2311 ​ or equivalent) by the beginning of Fall 2012, will also be allowed 3 (three) D and/or F grades in those courses before being required to change their major to a major more appropriate to their goals and academic performance, and to a major that is not conferred by the Department of Economics through the College of Arts and Sciences. .

Grade Forgiveness will NOT apply to the mandated requirement of changing majors.

Appeals to the required change of major will be handled in the Economics Department and ONLY those students whose appeal is based on exceptional circumstances will be considered.

Residency Requirement


Department Major Academic Residency Requirement - Minimum of 12 hours of upper-level major coursework must be completed at USF.

College of Arts & Sciences Major Academic Residency Requirement - 50% of major must be completed at USF

USF Academic Residency Requirement - 30 of the last 60 hours earned must be from USF

Research Opportunities


Undergraduate students in any degree program are able to participate in undergraduate research. Several options exist to show mentored undergraduate research activity on a student’s official transcript. Those who wish to enroll in an undergraduate research course should consult with their academic advisor to understand how the credit will apply towards the degree requirements. If no credit is needed, students may be eligible to enroll in the 0-credit IDS 4914  course. This course will not impact degree credits or GPA but will show on an official transcript and document the experience. The Office of Undergraduate Research is able to assist with further inquiries.
