ASL Interpreting and Deaf Studies B.A.
Certified Global Pathways Program
The ASL Interpreting and Deaf Studies major develops students’ understanding of the Deaf community as a unique sociolinguistic minority group. This major prepares students to work within this community in a variety of roles with particular emphasis on careers in American Sign Language education and in ASL/English interpreting. The major is designed with a multidisciplinary approach to the study of Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing people in the areas of teaching, language, community, history, culture, interpretation, and literature.
The undergraduate program in ASL Interpreting & Deaf Studies offers two curriculum concentrations that lead to the B.A. degree:
- ASL Interpreting: The ASL Interpreting concentration prepares individuals to work in settings that require an interpreter to facilitate communication between Deaf and hearing individuals.
- Deaf Studies: The Deaf Studies concentration seeks to educate students to communicate and interact with people who are d/Deaf and to apply this knowledge within work settings in which knowledge of d/Deafness and Deaf culture is essential. The Deaf Studies concentration is intended to prepare students to work in a variety of settings such as social services, vocational rehabilitation, and ASL education.
This program has been certified as a Global Pathway. Global Pathway programs have significant global content and align with the goals of USF’s Quality Enhancement Plan, the Global Citizens Project. Students in Global Pathway programs are well positioned to earn the Global Citizen Award and become eligible to apply for a study abroad scholarship offered by the Global Citizens Project.
University Admissions
Admission to the University is based on the University’s Undergraduate Admission Requirements that may be found by clicking on the following urls:
State Mandated Common Course Prerequisites
- ASL X140 Basic Sign Language - 4 credit hours
- ASL X150 Intermediate Sign Language - 4 credit hours
- ASL X161 or ASL X160 American Sign Language III - 4 credit hours
- ASL X201 or ASL X200 American Sign Language IV - 4 credit hours
- ASL X301 or ASL X300 Structure of Sign Language - 4 credit hours
FOR ALL MAJORS: Students are strongly encouraged to select required lower division electives that will enhance their general education coursework and that will support their intended baccalaureate degree program. Students should consult with an academic advisor in their major degree area.
Students entering the ASL Interpreting concentration must demonstrate proficiency in ASL at the intermediate level prior to beginning the first semester of core courses in the major. Proficiency is demonstrated through successful completion of the ASL prerequisite courses listed below (or equivalent transfer courses) with a minimum grade of B- or higher in each course.

Other Concentration Requirements
- Graduation within the ASL Interpreting Concentration also requires successful completion of the Center for the Assessment of Sign Language Interpreters (CASLI) written NIC examination.

GPA Requirements
Students must have an overall 2.0 GPA in core.
Grading Requirements
- A student must receive a “C-” grade or better in all courses within the major (some prerequisites may require higher minimum grades).
- Any student who receives a grade of “D+” or lower in two or more USF Communication Sciences and Disorders courses will be required to either change concentrations within CSD or pursue major reselection. If a student changes concentrations within the CSD major, pursuant to receiving two or more “D+” or lower grades, and earns and additional “D+” or lower grade in any major course, the student will be required to pursue major reselection. In other words, any student with three “D+” or lower grades in USF Communication Sciences and Disorders courses will be required to pursue major reselection.
Note: Students may use grade forgiveness to improve GPA, but all “D+” or lower grades will count towards the maximum allowed total “D+” or lower grades in the major whether grade forgiven or not.
Foreign Language Requirement
In addition to the foreign language entrance requirement, all students applying for a Bachelor of Arts degree from USF must demonstrate competency in a foreign language. To demonstrate this competency, students may take either two semesters of a beginning college-level foreign language or one semester of a higher-level course and earn a letter grade of “C” (no “S” grades) or above in the appropriate level course or demonstrate equivalent competency by passing an examination. Students may fulfill this requirement by demonstrating fluency in a language other than English and proficiency in English, as demonstrated in successful coursework or examination in English.
Research Opportunities
Undergraduate students in any degree program are able to participate in undergraduate research. Several options exist to show mentored undergraduate research activity on a student’s official transcript. Those who wish to enroll in an undergraduate research course should consult with their academic advisor to understand how the credit will apply towards the degree requirements. If no credit is needed, students may be eligible to enroll in the 0-credit IDS 4914 course. This course will not impact degree credits or GPA but will show on an official transcript and document the experience. The Office of Undergraduate Research is able to assist with further inquiries.
