The Bachelor of Arts in World Languages and Cultures offers students a solid foundation in language and linguistic skills, as well as knowledge of diverse cultures. Upon completion of the program, students will be able to interact and participate in a global environment.

State Mandated Common Prerequisites

Students wishing to transfer to USF should complete an A.A. degree at a Florida College System institution. Some courses required for the major may also meet General Education requirements thereby transferring maximum hours to the university.

If a student wishes to transfer without an A.A. degree and has fewer than 60 semester hours of acceptable credit, the student must meet the university’s entering freshman requirements including ACT or SAT test scores, GPA, and course requirements.

Transfer students are also required to comply with the immunization, foreign language, and continuous enrollment policies of the university.

Students should complete the following prerequisite courses at the lower level prior to entering the university. If these courses are not taken at a Florida College System institution, they must be completed before the degree is granted.

Unless stated otherwise, a grade of C- is the minimum acceptable grade in prerequisite courses.

PLEASE NOTE: It is recommended that the student take the degree courses at the lower division, although the courses are not required for entry into the program.

NOTE: Native or heritage speakers or other persons with experience in a foreign language may qualify for a higher level language course, or exempt course(s) entirely. Please see the university to ensure proper advising and placement.

Required Concentrations: (24 credit hours)

Students complete a World Languages and Cultures program of study and at least one concentration in: Applied Linguistics; Chinese Language and Culture; Classics; East Asian Languages and Cultures; French and Francophone Studies; German; Interdisciplinary Classical Civilizations; Italian; Russian; Spanish and Latin American Studies; or a combination of two concentrations (dual concentrations), completing 12 credit hours in one chosen concentration and 12 credit hours in the other chosen concentration.

Prior to declaring a dual concentration, students should consult with the World Languages advisors and faculty to determine the best combination of coursework. Some dual concentrations may require additional credit hours to meet the minimum credit hours for the concentration.

The following dual concentrations are not allowed:

Chinese Language and Culture + East Asian Languages and Cultures
Classics + Interdisciplinary Classical Civilizations

Spanish and Latin American Studies Concentration: 8 courses; 24 credit hours

The Interdisciplinary Spanish and Latin American Studies concentration focuses on the language and culture of the Spanish-speaking world. Spanish is a global language, the second most spoken native language in the world. The historical ties with Spain, the proximity of Spanish America, and the presence of many Spanish speakers in the United States make knowledge of Spanish and the culture of the Spanish-speaking world highly relevant to students in all disciplines.

Please note the following restrictions:

No more than six credit hours of coursework between 2240-2999 may be applied to the Spanish concentration.
A student may take no more than one course with an SPT prefix.
SPN 2240 Conversation I and SPN 2341 may also be counted as concentration electives, unless the course has been used to fulfill another concentration and/or major requirement.
The requirements of SPN 3300 or SPN 2340 may be waived for qualified students. These students will take an additional course to satisfy the concentration requirements.

A C- or better to meet major course requirements unless specified elsewhere. Will vary by area.

Note: Some USF courses have higher grade criteria to meet prerequisite knowledge necessary for progression into higher level courses.

Residency Requirements

Department and College of Arts & Sciences Major Academic Residency Requirement - 50% of major must be completed at USF.

USF Academic Residency Requirement - 30 of the last 60 hours earned must be from USF.

Research Opportunities

All undergraduate students in any degree program can participate in undergraduate research. There are a number of options to receive academic credit for a mentored research experience and to have the experience show on the official transcript. Students who wish to enroll in an undergraduate research course should consult with their academic advisor to understand how the credit will apply towards the degree requirements. If no credit is needed, students may be eligible to enroll in the 0-credit IDS 4914 course. This course will not impact degree credits or GPA but will show on an official transcript and document the experience. The Office of Undergraduate Research will assist students in understanding the various course options.
