The mission of PCGS is achieving sustainable development, both locally and globally, by fostering social, economic and environmental sustainability; we accomplish this through teaching, research, mentoring students and community outreach, as well as by generating practical knowledge and developing innovative technologies, skills and policies.

The Patel College of Global Sustainability seeks to ensure that the concepts, principles, definitions, models, and applications of “sustainability” are progressively expanded at the University of South Florida (USF) and beyond; we encourage the natural interconnections among those units on campus addressing ecology, economics, policy, politics and culture; we recognize the essential contributions of scholars and professionals in engineering, business, architecture, urban planning, geosciences, health, global studies and the natural and social sciences; and, we aspire to create and maintain the conditions under which humans and nature can exist in productive harmony, fulfilling the social, economic and environmental requirements of present and future generations.

The Master of Science (M.S.) in Global Sustainability offers five (5) academic concentrations, available in a traditional on-campus format, blended hybrid formats or fully online: Entrepreneurship, Food Sustainability and Security, Sustainable Energy, Sustainable Transportation, and Water Sustainability. This interdisciplinary program is designed around a curriculum of sustainability sciences and will prepare students to address complex local, regional, national, and global challenges related to water management, renewable energy, food resources, sustainable transportation planning and green entrepreneurship with the ability to innovate in security, sustainability and resilience contexts. The Patel College of Global Sustainability strives to offer a dynamic graduate curriculum, cutting-edge research projects, top-notch internship experiences, and an overall academically superior education for our students.

Major Research Areas: Sustainability science, environmental protection, public transportation, sustainable food systems, renewable energy, green technology, biofuels development, material ecology, water resource management.

Admission Information

Must meet University Admission and English Proficiency requirements, as well as requirements for admission to the major, listed below.

  • GRE Verbal score of 153 or higher, Quantitative of 153 or higher, and Analytical Writing of 3.5 or higher, all taken within 5 years prior to application may be required. GRE may be waived with relevant professional experience.
  • At least two letters of recommendation from professors or supervisors (signed, dated, and on official letterhead).
  • Resume
  • Statement of Purpose (Up to 350 words including the student’s academic and professional background, choice of concentration, reasons for pursuing this degree, and their professional goals in terms of contributing to global sustainability).

International Students
International students who have not completed a bachelor’s degree from an accredited U.S. institution and do not have a GPA on a 4.00 scale, must submit a transcript evaluation that outlines U.S. degree equivalency, along with a GPA estimation. 

Non-English transcripts must be translated by a foreign transcript evaluation service that certifies the U.S. degree equivalency and GPA estimation.

Total Minimum Hours: 36

  • Core Requirements - 12 credit hours
  • Concentration Courses - 9 credit hours
  • Electives - 9 credit hours
  • Internship/Research - 6 credit hours
  • Comprehensive Exam

Internship/Research Requirement (6 Credit Hours)


The required 6 credit Internship or Research Project will be completed in the student’s last semester.

Comprehensive Exam


The Internship or research report serves as the program’s comprehensive exam. As part of this process students write a final report and deliver a presentation based on their internship work or research project, both of which are graded.
