Admission Requirements

Teacher Preparation Programs

Teacher preparation programs are ideal for students who wish to become classroom teachers as these programs are designed to result in eligibility for teacher certification in the state of Florida. Information on this program can be found on the College of Education website.

Admission criteria for undergraduate teacher preparation programs include the following:

  1.  Admission to the University of South Florida
  2.  An application to the College of Education’s Teacher Preparation Programs
  3.  A minimum overall GPA of 2.50 (on a 4.0 scale)
  4.  Completion of or enrollment in appropriate prerequisite coursework for the student’s intended major.

Effective July 1, 2021, the State of Florida changed its requirement for students to pass the General Knowledge Test (GKT) for admission to teacher preparation programs. The GKT is no longer required for admission. However, it is highly recommended that students pass the GKT before beginning their first term in their College of Education.

Students who apply to the College of Education after prior admission/enrollment in the college are required to disclose reason for departure.

Exercise Science Program

The Exercise Science program is designed to equip future  professionals with the knowledge and skills to meet the diverse health and performance needs of our population through the integration of coursework with laboratory-based and field-based experiential learning. The program also provides a pathway to graduate education in the health profession. It is a rigorous, cohort program requiring the completion of specialized admission criteria. Information on this program can be found on the College of Education website.

Admission criteria for Exercise Science includes the following:

  1. Admission  to the University of South Florida.
  2. An application to the College of Education for the Exercise Science program.
  3. Earn a B- or higher in the following courses in no more than two attempts per course:
    • BSC X085/X085L OR PET X322/X322L OR BSC X093/X093L OR APK X100C OR BSC X085C OR BSC X093C
    • BSC X086/X086L OR APX 105C OR BSC X094/X094L or PET X323C

    • MAC X105 OR MAC X140 OR MAC X147 OR MAC X311
  4. Attend an Exercise Science orientation the week prior to the beginning of the fall semester.

Clinical Education

All teacher preparation programs include required clinical education. Clinical experiences allow teacher candidates to put theory into practice as they learn to teach within partnership schools in our local school districts.

Background Checks and Fingerprinting

All students seeking admission to teacher preparation programs will be required to undergo a background check and fingerprinting during the admission process. International students should be mindful that fingerprinting requires a social security number. Visit the following link for fingerprinting instructions.

Depending upon the outcome of the background check, students may be informed they cannot be placed in a particular school district. As each program determines the school district(s) in which to place their students, past legal history may impact a student’s ability to enter field experience and continue in an teacher preparation program. Please be advised that program and/or course requirements and fingerprinting/background check procedures are subject to change per state legislative mandates, Florida State Department of Education program approval standards, accreditation criteria, and school district policy and procedures. Students can learn more about fingerprinting from Student Academic Services.

Repeating a Clinical Experience

A candidate who receives an unsatisfactory grade or withdraws when performing unsatisfactorily in any clinical experience may be allowed by the program to re-enroll in that course one additional time for a total of two attempts. In the event that a candidate needs to repeat the clinical experience, the candidate must request permission to do so by completing a College of Education petitionto the appropriate department or program. If permission is granted, the student must meet with designated College of Education personnel to develop an action plan for the experience that may include enrollment in a course(s). There is no guarantee that the request will be approved for the semester for which the request/appeal is made.

If a studentreceives an unsatisfactory grade or withdraws when performing unsatisfactorily in any clinical experience, the candidate will be removed from the College of Education.

General Knowledge Test (GKT)

Effective  summer/fall (2022), student admitted to a teacher preparation program on the  Tampa or Sarasota/Manatee  campus will need to submit passing scores for the GKT prior to entering their final internship.

Graduation Requirements

The College of Education strives to ensure students graduate in a timely fashion and are well-prepared for their chosen career.

Students seeking to graduate from a state-approved teacher preparation program with embedded Reading and ESOL endorsements must pass all portions of the Florida Teacher Certification Exam (FTCE).

Students who graduate prior to passing all portions of the FTCE will not earn a statement on their transcript indicating graduation from a state-approved teacher preparation program with respective endorsements.

  2. Courses completed over five years but less than ten years ago must have the approval of the chairperson from the department in which the equivalent course is taught.
  3. Courses completed ten years ago or longer will count as elective credit only toward graduation.
