State Mandated Common Course Prerequisites - Music Studies B.A. (30 credit hours)

Following Florida BOG Regulation 8.010, state mandated common course prerequisites are lower-division courses that are required for progression into the upper division of a particular baccalaureate degree program.

Transfer students should complete the following prerequisite courses at the lower level prior to entering the university. If these courses are not taken at a Florida College System institution, they must be completed before the degree is granted. Successful completion of common prerequisites alone does not guarantee a student admission into the degree program.

Unless stated otherwise, a grade of C- is the minimum acceptable grade in prerequisite courses.

• MUT X111 OR MUT X121 - 3 credit hours
• MUT X112 OR MUT X122 - 3 credit hours
• MUT X116 OR MUT X126 - 3 credit hours
• MUT X117 OR MUT X127 - 3 credit hours
• Select from the following options for 4 credits:
  • (MUT X241 AND MUT X242 AND X246 AND MUT X247) - 1 credit each for 4 total credit hours
  • (MUT X221 AND MUT X222 AND X226 AND X227) - 1 credit each for 4 total credit hours
  • (MUT X271 AND X272 AND X276 AND X277) - 1 credit each for 4 total credit hours
• Take 4 semesters of the following coursework: *

FOR ALL MAJORS: Students are strongly encouraged to select required lower division electives that will enhance their general education coursework and that will support their intended baccalaureate degree program. Students should consult with an academic advisor in their major degree area.

*   Music program national accreditation requires minimum semesters of exposure in specified coursework.

**  DEFINITIONS: MVxXX1X and MVxXX2X are defined as courses under one of the specified prefixes that constantly maintain the digit 1 or 2 (depending upon which course) while allowing 0-9 to replace each “X.” The prefix varies depending upon the student’s focus (i.e., Brass, Strings, Woodwinds, etc.) Prefix areas to choose from are  MVB, MVH, MVJ, MVK, MVO, MVP, MVS, MVV, and MVW. Two examples of possible courses are MVB1011 or MVP1311. Examples for MVxXX2X are MVW2223 and MVK2222.

The Music Studies B.A. uses the Mathematical Thinking in Context Mathematics Pathway with the following requirements:

Major Core Courses: 4 courses; 11 credit hours

• IDS 2640 - Creativity in the Arts Credit(s): 2
• MUM 2050 - Introduction to Entrepreneurship in Music Credit(s): 3
• MUS 4308 - Music Technology with Artificial Intelligence Credit(s): 3
• Take one music history or ethnomusicology course. MUH 2XXX, 3XXX, 4XXX

Supporting Required Course: 1 course; 0 credit hours

The following course is a prerequisite and supporting course for this major. It is required for the major. The degree will not be awarded if this course has not been taken by the end of the student’s final semester.

• MUS 2010 - Recital Attendance Credit(s): 0

• Attendance at minimum four (4) programs per semester for four semesters. Must be registered each of the semesters.
