French and Francophone Studies Minor

French is a truly global language, the official or second language of over forty countries worldwide and an important tool in business and diplomacy. Our faculty offer a large variety of courses in literature and culture across different media, genres, centuries, and geographical regions. Our faculty is attentive and our students form a close community.

The placement record for our graduates is impressive, including students who go on to obtain advanced academic degrees and professional degrees such as law and business. Others apply their French to teaching, politics, academic administration, and federal government jobs.

Minor Elective Hours: 15


  • Select 15 hours of FRE or FRW courses above FRE 2200 (French III).

NOTE: One course (3 credits) may be an FRT course given in English.

GPA Requirement


A GPA of 2.0 or better in the minor is required for certification.

Grading Requirement


Unless stated otherwise, a grade of “C-” is the minimum acceptable grade.

Residency Requirements


CAS Minor Academic Residency Requirement: 50% of minor must be completed at USF.

Other Requirements


The French minor strongly encourages study abroad and provides advice on the same. USF World USF World offers several programs in France and Francophone countries.
