TOTAL DEGREE HOURS: 120
Plans of Study

The University of South Florida offers a four-year program leading to the Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences. The first three years are completed on campus; the fourth year (12 months) is completed at one of three affiliated hospitals in Florida, located in Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Jacksonville. Admission to the fourth year is limited by the number of openings in affiliated hospitals and, at the present time, is competitive. Selection for the clinical program is made by the hospitals and students not admitted to a clinical program will need to select an alternate degree. Generally, hospitals require a minimum GPA of 2.50 to a 2.75, and our students admitted to clinical programs in recent years have had a mean GPA of 3.4 or higher. Students successfully completing this program will be granted a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences.

State Mandated Common Course Prerequisites - Medical Laboratory Sciences B.S. (37 credit hours)

Following Florida BOG Regulation 8.010, state mandated common course prerequisites are lower-division courses that are required for progression into the upper division of a particular baccalaureate degree program.

Transfer students should complete the State Mandated Common Course Prerequisites at the lower level prior to entering the university. If these courses are not taken at a Florida College System institution, they must be completed before the degree is granted. Successful completion of the common prerequisites alone does not guarantee a student admission into the degree program.

Unless stated otherwise, a grade of C- is the minimum acceptable grade in prerequisite courses.

  • BSC X010C OR BSC X011C OR (BSC X010 AND BSC X010L) OR (BSC X011 AND BSC X011L) - 4 credit hours
  • BSC X093C OR BSC X085C OR ZOO X733C OR (BSC X093 AND BSC X093L) OR (BSC X085 AND BSC X085L) OR (ZOO X733 AND ZOO X733L) OR (ZOO X731 AND ZOO X731L) - 4 credit hours

State Mathematics Pathway – Medical Laboratory Sciences B.S. (6 Credit Hours)*

The Medical Laboratory Sciences B.S. uses the Statistical Reasoning Mathematics Pathway with the following requirements:

Medical Laboratory Sciences Supporting Required Courses: 2 courses; 4 credit hours

Students choose one of two supporting course sequence options, based on the completed common course prerequisites. The two course sequence options are as follows.

The minimum acceptable grade in each Supporting Required Course is a grade of C-.

Note: The course sequence that will count toward the Supporting Required Courses requirement is based on which course (Cellular Processes or Biodiversity) the student took to meet the state mandated common prerequisite requirement. If the Cellular Processes sequence was taken to fulfill the state mandated common prerequisite requirement, the Biodiversity sequence will meet the Supporting Required Courses requirement. The opposite is true if the Biodiversity requirement was used to meet the state mandated common course requirement.

The following courses are supporting courses for this major. They are required for the major. The degree will not be awarded if these courses have not been taken by the end of the student’s final semester.

  1. Cellular Processes: 2 courses; 4 credit hours

  2. Biodiversity: 2 courses; 4 credit hours

Major Core Courses: 8 courses; 19 credit hours

Clinical Training Courses: 8 courses; 30 hours

Upon successful completion of this curriculum and acceptance by one of the affiliated hospitals, the student will complete twelve (12) continuous months of training at that hospital. Hospital programs begin in July or early August each year and some hospitals also have programs beginning in January. During this clinical training, the student will continue to be registered as a full-time student at the University and will receive a total of 30 credit hours of coursework in the following courses, which will be taught at the hospital.
