Actuarial Science Minor - Non-Business Majors

The Actuarial Science minor is designed to support students who have sufficient quantitative skills and are interested in pursuing a career in actuarial science.  Statistics and actuarial mathematics courses help prepare students for the first two actuarial exams. Risk management and insurance courses provide students with an understanding of the essential actuarial functions of ratemaking, loss reserving, and data analytics, as well as fundamental knowledge of insurance markets, operations, and products.

Minor Requirements: 15 Credit Hours


Statistics and actuarial mathematics courses will help prepare students for the first two actuarial exams (probability and financial mathematics).  Risk management and insurance courses provide students with an understanding of the essential actuarial functions of ratemaking, loss reserving, and data analytics, as well as fundamental knowledge of insurance markets, operations, and products.

Minor Core Courses: 4 courses; 12 credit hours


The actuarial minor core consists of 4 courses from mathematics, statistics, and risk management and insurance.  These courses provide support for the probability and financial mathematics exams, data analytics using insurance sector data, and the introduction to insurance markets, operations, products, and pricing.

Minor Elective Courses: 1 course; 3 credit hours


The minor elective allows the student to focus on one of three insurance industry segments: property and casualty, life and health, or retirement plans/employee benefits.

Additional Information


Students must complete a minimum of 6 credits and two courses exclusive to the minor that will not count toward the student’s major or other minors. These credits/courses must be completed at USF and must be upper level courses.

Additionally, a maximum of 3 credits of S/U coursework may be counted toward the minor.

GPA Requirements


Minimum GPA of 2.0
